Demographic Dynamics and Marginalization: The Case of Chiapas.

Germán Martínez & Jorge López
Colegio de la Frontera Sur, México

This essay intends to contribute to understanding of the socio-economic reality of Chiapas by correlating two basic variables: the demographic dynamics and the marginalization index of Chiapas. Chiapas is a Mexican state that shows significant economic backwardness in relation to the national average based on indicators such as the per capita Gross Domestic Product, the human development index and the marginalization indces; in Chiapas there are also profound inqualities between different municipalities and regions. Although it is true that in the 1990's the proportion number of highly and very highly marginalized municipalities decreased, from 62 % in 1990 to 56% in 2000 (out of a total of 111 municipalities), it is also true that the population increased from 1.23 million in the beginning of the decades to 1.33 million in 2000, and this increase is sharpest in those municipalities where indigenous People are a majority. A test of Beta convergence will be applied to determine the behavior over time of these variables.
